A Deep Dive into the History of Himalayan Salt

What is Himalayan Salt?

Himalayan Salt is a pink coloured natural mineral extracted from the colossal mine known as the Khewra Salt Mine and is based in Jhelum, Pakistan. Himalayan Salt is used worldwide for both consumption and as mantle pieces. It is used most in cooking as seasoning and also for its healing properties. They are also used for home decor mainly due to its unique pink colour but also for its benefits which include air cleansing properties helping those with asthma and allergies.


Creation of Himalayan Salt

Himalayan Salt dates backs to hundreds of millions of years around the precambrian era. It was previously known to be an inland which gradually dried up, leaving natural salts along with mineral deposits behind. As time passed, the area was covered with layers on layers causing pressure on the specific area. The tight pressure caused moisture and over time heat caused the moisture to evaporate, the water particles were mixed with the salts thus it began to crystallise. Eventually the crystals (Himalayan Salt) began to spread and grow in to what is now the largest salt mine in the world.

Discovery of Himalayan Salt

The mystery still remains as to whom founded/ discovered Himalayan Salt. The most prominent/ evident of all is that it was discovered by Alexander The Great 326 BC during his Indian Campaign. While Alexander seems to take the credit for discovering the salt, his horses first figured out the unique mineral. It is known that his horses were deeply attracted towards the salt-rick rocks in the sea region/ Upon further investigation, Alexander and his soldiers uncovered the secret salt.

Circulation of Himalayan Salts

Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar initially tested the extraction of the Himalayan salt; however, even back then, the quantity present was underestimated. Therefore, it was Emperor Akbar who carried out extensive mining and used it as a trading commodity.

The Himalayan salt is extracted by crying out a method introduced in 1827 by a British engineer. The salt is said to be extracted by making use of the Room and Pillar architectural system. Also referred to as Dome and Pillar method, it ensures sustainability and prevents safety hazards from occurring. Furthermore, this method ensures that only 50% of the salt gets harvested and extracted in every room. 
Eventually, the pillars and domes created space for mine carts to extract the salt making it much faster and easier to extract. In recent years the Mine Carts have been changed to miniature train carriages as it is also used as a tourist attraction.

Today, Himalayan Salt is still being used worldwide. In fact, it has become much more popular other than its use for consumption. The most popular is the Himalayan Lamp which emits light, gradually releasing its positive minerals and ions into the air which cleanses the air helping those with asthma and allergies.

It’s known to have medical benefits. However, that’s not all. Besides its myriad medical benefits, this salt is also equipped with preservative qualities and was used back in the old days in the Nepalese valleys to keep their meat, including fish, fresh.

This salt also referred to as “white gold,” is the choice of authentic chefs worldwide. The pink salt is used for grilling, seasoning, roasting, baking, and cooking. Its relatively higher mineral content, pink color, and unique texture add a special touch to food items. The Himalayan salt is a huge hit in the culinary world as it is also often used as cutting boards, serving dishes, and even as cooking surfaces.

A wide range of products is made from Himalayan salt because of its aesthetic appeal and benefits. These products range from lamps and bath slats to other spa products such as body scrubs, massage stones, soaps, scrubs, and even edible cookware items like bowls, cups, and dishes.
